Great product! 3 protective layers will definitely do the job! Keyboard protector stays on snug. Hard case with plastic screen and camera shield are great additives. And the soft case that form fits to the hard case adds the needed grip and protective bounce.

Although it does add some bulk to the device, it's compact and does not get in the way of the device's functions. It's a tank! I think this case is a great way to fend off robbers. Belt clip basically makes you feel like Batman with a utility belt. I don't recommend fighting crime with a blackberry... but I'm sure there'll be an app for that soon :) -- Protection, Function, Tank Status

With the standard case from RIM once you take the phone out of the case there is no protection if you drop the phone, and with the silicon cases that wrap around the phone it was to tight to fit into the standard case.

The Defender case does everything I wanted. It has a hard outer carrying case with a belt hook, it has a hard inner case around the phone with a clear screen cover, and then an outer rubber case. All of the outer controls are easy to access and work fine.

I was carrying a box on my hip and knocked the phone out of it's cradle, it hit the ground and not a scratch. You do have to remove the outer rubber case & open the hard shell to clean the screen if any dirt or lint blocks the screen.

The only "complaint" I have is the rubber shell is a magnet for cat fur...

With the lower price it's great insurance for the phone.

I have the Otterbox Defender for my BB 8900 and love it. The Otterbox Defender for the BB 9700 has the same high quality build but they fell short on a couple of things imho.

1) They should have given a little more room at the top of the optical mouse, it's a tight fit and it's not as easy to scroll down... especially, when you are scrolling a long page.
2) The sides of the case are right up to the edge of the left/right keyboard keys making it more difficult for those of us with bigger fingers to type those keys. The 8900 case has a decent gap between the edge of the case and the keys on the left/right sides making it easier to hit those keys.

Of course, everybody is different and the problems noted above may not be a concern to you. For me, I'm a little disappointed when I compare it to the previous model I have. It's like they designed the case but didn't actually try to use it. Otterbox does change their design on an existing model from time to time, I'm hoping they make some tweaks to address these problems.

The case is a perfect fit for BB 9700. No hassles in putting it on, sits correctly. It has a hard and a soft exterior which protects the phone when accidental drops happen. My only complaint is the outer layer, which is made of rubber, catches a lot of lint and needs frequent cleaning. It actually looks embarassing sometimes. Wonder if I should have got the commuter case. -- Nice Case but .....
